Seafarers [Jul. 24th, 2006|05:58 pm]

[mood |curiouscurious]

Hello! Just joined this community and excited to see so many other people addicted to this game. I am spreading the word through my friends, and lots of them are buying their own sets for practice, and then getting in touch for tournaments!

I'd love to expand the options with Seafarers as well, but only have a German set, with a slightly ropey English translation. I've played a few times, but it never seems to go very well. I wonder if there are any experts out there that could possibly advise me where we are going wrong.

What's all this about moving ships? Can't really see why you would want to, unless you could move a whole LINE of ships. After you have sailed to one island, and built a village, it would be good to use the same ships to sail somewhere else. Rules seem to be fairly clear that this isn't the point though... so what is?

Also, in the versions where you have to discover what each hex is, after landing there - how do you decide which number goes on that particular hex?

and, finally,
How is the pirate different from the robber?

Many many many thanks to anyone who has the time to help me out. :)

Super Settlers [Jul. 13th, 2006|03:00 pm]
Fans of Settlers of Catan

Next week I'm getting together with some friends to play a second game of Super Settlers (two complete sets of the game with expansions merged together). Other than playing to 30 points and having to discard to half your hand or down to 7 cards (whichever is less) when a 7 is rolled, the game is pretty much the same.

Has anyone else played a 'super' game? If so, did you come up with any interesting house rules for the game?

Hi! My name's Janet! I have offically played four games of Settlers and I love it! A friend that taught me how to play just bought me the fame for Christmas. Yippy I am so happy! I hope that I can learn more about the game and also become a much better player! I have yet to win, even though I have come very close...until someone builds a longer road and then beats me! :( That's it for now! Thanks for letting me join!

I played a very rules intensive game last night [Oct. 13th, 2005|10:01 am]

I've been playing Catan for about seven years and have played approximately one thousand games. These days I try to get in at least one game a week, on average.

Last night we played the most rules testing game I have played in a long while. Subjects that came up included:

  • Can you trade for played soldiers to increase your Largest Army size?
  • Can you play Dev Cards on the same go as you have traded for them as they were not built that go? We usually play that if you trade for a Dev Card that has just been built when it's not your go you can use it on your next go even if that's immediately following the go of the person who built it.
  • If a Longest Road is broken and there is then a draw for Longest Road do the points go to the person who achieved the road of the shorter length first, the person who previously had longest road or noone?

We also had the potential for someone (me, as it happens) to break a longest road, and therefore give it to someone who was already on 8 points, and gain 10 points themselves thus creating a draw. This is a situation I have never seen in Catan despite, as I say, having played around 1,000 games and having played in tournaments as well as online.
